First Consultation :Typically a first consultation lasts 45 minutes in which a full case history is taken. This is just a series of questions to find out the site of pain and other symptoms. We need to know what may have caused the injury and how everyday activities effect the pain. Information on past medical history and a medication being taken needs to recorded. The patient will then be asked to remove outer clothing however if you feel uncomfortable with this, then the practitioner will work around your clothes. This is followed by a physical examination where the patient is asked to perform some simple movements to test the effected area. Some standard neurological screening is performed. All this enables your practitioner to form a diagnosis of your condition. After explaining this diagnosis to the patient we shall commence treatment. This will be tapered to the individual patient and might include techniques such as massage, stretching, exercises and adjustments. Most patients feel relief and improvement in their symptoms immediately following treatment. Some may feel sore for 24 - 48 hours after treatment and then feel improvement.
Simple conditions can be relieved fully in one or two sessions. More long standing conditions might need further treatment. If necessary x-rays or MRI scans will be requested to further clarify the diagnosis and the best form of treatment. In some cases you will be referred back to your GP, orthopedic consultant, or appropriate specialist. . For children under 16 years old a parent or guardian must remain in the consultation room throughout and everything is explained to the parent as well as the child. |
